JOB DESCRIPTION: Humane Education Volunteer

GOAL: The goal of the Humane Education Volunteer is to make students aware of the exceptional adoptable animals and services we have at our shelter; and of the humane concepts that can lead to a respect for all other species with which we share the planet.

SUPERVISOR: KHS public education coordinator and/or Volunteer Coord.

TIME COMMITMENT: Approximately 3-5 hrs. per week or month (Mon.- Fri.) for a minimum of one year.

AVAILABLE TIMES: Hours vary during school year and summer programs.

DUTIES: Give presentations to schoolchildren in the Wichita area about the Kansas Humane Society and its services, responsible pet ownership, and dog bite prevention. Presentations may be in schools or in a day care or after school program setting. Volunteers will occasionally be asked to give educational tours of the Kansas Humane Society.

TRAINING: Completion of Volunteer Orientation. In addition, each volunteer humane educator must complete Humane Educator training classes (offered on Saturdays in January, March, May, July September and November), and presentation observations.

QUALIFICATIONS: Humane educators must be reliable and independent; be able to communicate well with children and adults as well as speak in front of large audiences; have a genuine concern for the well-being of all animals; be an advocate for the Kansas Humane Society; and have a strong belief in the power of education. Humane educators will provide their own transportation to and from presentations. MUST BE AT LEAST 18 YEARS OF AGE.
