KANSAS HUMANE SOCIETY

JOB DESCRIPTION: Project Companionship Volunteer

GOAL: The goal of the Project Companionship Volunteer is to bring the joy of animals to people who no longer have the ability to enjoy an animal companion on a day-to-day basis. This position is a win-win situation for all involved; the residents love to have animals to visit, the volunteers get great satisfaction, and the animals get a chance to be out of their kennels and in a social environment.

SUPERVISOR: Team Captain and/or Volunteer Coordinator

TIME COMMITMENT: At least once per month (approx. 3 hrs) for a minimum of six months.

AVAILABLE TIMES: At this time, most Project Companionship visits are scheduled on weekdays. Times vary for mornings and afternoons.

DUTIES: Project Companionship volunteers first come to the shelter to select a pet with an appropriate temperament for a care facility. To choose an animal, it is best that you spend some time getting to know it. Once the animal is chosen, you will be taking it to a nursing home or other type of care facility to visit with the residents and staff at that facility.

TRAINING: Completion of Volunteer Orientation. Additional training will be given by the Team Captain and/or the Volunteer Coordinator.

QUALIFICATIONS: Must have the ability to work well with both people and animals, a strong desire to learn as much as possible about the emotional and physical needs of a wide variety of animals, must be sensitive to the special needs of some of the residents you will be visiting. MUST BE AT LEAST 18 YEARS OF AGE.
