General and Seasonal Tips for Pet Owners
Pets and Fireworks
Many pets can become traumatized by the loud and confusing noise of fireworks. Reactions may include panting and whimpering, jumping high fences, breaking chains, or even crashing through windows. Frequently, dogs who are upset by fireworks run miles away, winding up confused, disoriented, exhausted, and lost. Many people call animal shelters after July 4 to try to locate missing dogs. If your dog is upset by fireworks, leave him indoors, and make sure someone stays with him. Consult with your veterinarian about the possibility of tranquilizing your pet. Or work with an animal behaviorist ahead of time to help alleviate your pets fears and suffering.
