Tips for Cat Owners
Cat Behavior Problems
Shyness
If you have a cat that is not shy and suddenly becomes bashful, he may be ill. Consult with your veterinarian.
Some cats are shy by nature, just as some people are shy. Treat the cat gently and calmly, and give him plenty of time alone in a quiet environment. If the cat hides, do not force him to come out. You can try to coax the cat out of hiding by leaving a trail of food to the food bowl, moving the bowl a little further out each day. Praise your cat for every small bit of progress and reward him with a food treat. Be patient and your cat will eventually accept you.
Other things that may cause your cat to become shy are changes in its environment. Cats tend to respond to new or frightening situations by hiding.
A new person in the home or a new animal may cause your cat to become shy. Loud noises such as firecrackers or thunder sometimes causes a cat to hide. Be patient: don't force your cat to be social or you may end up bitten or scratched. Let the cat come out in his own good time.
Shy cats may be trained to be less shy. Consult with an animal behaviorist for more information.
