Cat Behavior Problems

Jumps on Counter or Other Forbidden Area

cat-on-table.gif (2611 bytes)Cats are jumpers by nature - they enjoy high places where they can feel secure and see their territory at the same time. The behavior may worsen if the cat is curious or hungry, as there are lots of interesting things on countertops, including food.

You can teach your cat to stay off of forbidden areas by giving him a verbal reprimand such as "NO!" or "OFF!" or clap your hands one time loudly. As soon as the cat gets down, say "Good kitty!" If he gets down quickly, offer a food treat and say "Good kitty!"

While your cat may stay off the counters while you are home, there are only two ways to prevent him from areas you don't want him to explore when you are away from home: booby trapping or confinement.

If you don't want to confine your cat, there are a number of effective ways to booby-trap the forbidden area:

For countertops, put a few strips of double-sided tape on the counter. Cats don't like the sensation of sticky paws. You could also try spraying white vinegar on the countertop to create an unpleasant smell.
