Cat Behavior Problems

Escapes/Wants Outside

cat-window.gif (1693 bytes)There are several reasons your kitty may try to escape or cry to be let outside. If he was an outdoor cat prior to coming indoors, has not been spayed or neutered, or has nothing to do inside the house, he's more prone to this behavior

Try these tips to stop this behavior:

  • Neuter or spay your kitty.

  • If you adopt a cat that is used to being outside, it may take a while for it to adapt to the indoors. Give him lots of affection, play with him often, and offer lots of his favorite food during the transition. Provide plenty of toys, especially interactive ones such as a catnip mouse tied to the end of a fishing pole that you can use to cast out and reel in. You might also consider a carpeted kitty condo or tree.

  • Provide a window perch so your cat can look outside. Allow him access to a screened-in porch, or even teach him to walk on a leash.

  • Get a second cat. Two cats will keep each other company.
