Adopt a Pet

HOW TO ADOPT

Thank you for your interest in adopting a Kansas Humane Society pet. In order to adopt, you must be 18 years of age or older (or accompanied by an adult), have a current picture ID, and be able and willing to spend the time and money necessary to provide training, medical treatment, and proper care for you pet.

Our website is a live reflection of animals available for adoption. However, due to the large number of animals we receive and adopt each day, we cannot guarantee that the pets listed online will still be available when you visit us. If you are interested in a particular pet, please call (316) 524-9196 for more information.

How does the adoption process work?

We ask that you complete a few, simple steps to adopt a pet from the Kansas Humane Society. These steps are designed to help make good matches between adopters and animals, to assist you in making the best selection possible for you, your family, and your lifestyle, and of course, to ensure that our animals go to loving, responsible, and permanent homes.

  1. When you come to our shelter to look for a pet, please come to the adoption desk and complete an adoption profile. An adoption counselor go over your profile with you and recommend pets to fit your lifestyle and interests.
  2. Let our adoption counselors know which pet you'd like to meet. We have quiet, private visiting rooms to give you and the pet a chance to get to know each other. We also welcome visits by other members of the household especially pets and kids!
  3. Fall in love with your new fuzzy friend and adopt them today. Or place the pet on "hold" and take some time to think about it. Choosing a new friend is a big decision and we'll work with you whether you want to adopt now or later.

What if I don't find a pet I want?
If you don't find the type of pet you're looking for, don't despair. We get in hundreds of animals every week--dogs, cats, puppies, kittens, mixed breeds, purebreds, and other animals like guinea pigs, rabbits and hamsters. If the one you're looking for isn't here today, it may be tomorrow. Just keep checking with us, and visit the shelter in person.
