The Weiss Walkie , developed by Wichita’s Dr. Emily Weiss, is a great leash designed to quickly and comfortably stop dogs from pulling. All KHS staff and volunteers use this handy leash to walk the dogs in our care.

The Weiss Walkie is a great tool for dog guardians and animal shelters who want an easy, dog-friendly way to walk their dogs! The Walkie is immediately accepted by dogs - no training necessary.

How does it work? The Weiss Walkie design incorporates principles of canine physiology and psychology to quickly and humanely stop pulling. It wraps around your dog’s barrel and attaches to your dog’s buckle collar. When the dog pulls, the Walkie applies slight pressure around the dog’s barrel – and dogs naturally decrease forward movement. The pressure around the chest also serves to naturally calm and relax the dog, to decrease arousal – very helpful for the dog that is easily excited.

That sentence used to be the last our staff offered adopters at the Kansas Humane Society. With no space for merchandise, we saw adopters go elsewhere for their pet needs and training advice. With the addition of a Retail Store at our new facility, that sentence has become:

Congratulations on adopting your dog. At 5 months old, he’s going to be a bit of a chewer. Let me show you our easy-to-use “busy” toys that will help him learn what’s appropriate to chew on, keeping the both of you happy. I can also show you how crate training works and set Pumpkin up with a custom ID tag.

Our Retail Store is designed to help pets and their new families get off to a great start together. Staff and volunteers work diligently to help prepare adopters for their new pet experience, and the KHS retail store makes it easy for adopters to leave with the resources they need to be successful.

And, since customers pay their adoption fee in the retail store, it provides a natural opportunity for staff and volunteers to visit with adopters and share products in the store that will help them be successful with their new family member. Our store focuses on providing the basics adopters need such as Science Diet pet food (which we feed all KHS pets), crates, collars, leashes, tags, litter boxes, chew toys, bedding and more.
