Volunteers make a huge difference in the lives of our pets and our staff. Our caring and hard-working volunteers help in all of our programs throughout the year.
We invite you to join our team today with three easy steps.
1) Fill Out Our Volunteer Application
All potential volunteers must have a volunteer application on file to be considered for the Kansas Humane Society volunteer program. You may download Volunteer Application (PDF), pick one up at KHS or request one by mail by calling (316) 524-9196 or via email.
2) Attend Orientation, Training Sessions and Interview
Before you begin volunteering at the Kansas Humane Society, we require that you:
attend an Orientation Session (we must receive your completed volunteer application to reserve your space at the orientation)
attend an Animal Handling Training Session
complete a one-on-one interview with our Volunteer department
pay a one-time program fee (not required for children 17 and under or Foster volunteers)
3) Commit to Volunteering for a Minimum of Six Hours a Month for Six Months
With our flexible hours, you’ll be able to tailor your volunteer experience around your schedule. |

Volunteer Orientation is held at the Kansas Humane Society, 3313 N. Hillside, on the Murfin Animal Care Campus, just off of K96 on Hillside. We will be meeting in Learning Center B. Please park in the northwest parking lot.
Your orientation includes an introduction to the Kansas Humane Society; a brief history of KHS; Q & A session; explanation of volunteer positions; "Power of Compassion" video and tour of the shelter.
You may choose the orientation date that is most convenient for you. Please note this date on your application. We'll email you a reminder of your chosen date. Note: Your choosen date reserves your space in our orientation. If the session you requested is full, we'll contact you.

I love animals. I want to be a veterinarian/zookeeper/biologist. Can I volunteer to work with animals?
Of course! Our volunteer positions range from socializing animals to walking dogs to helping in our veterinary clinic to working with
potential adopters. See our Volunteer Positions for more information.
How old do I have to be to volunteer?
You must be 18 or older to volunteer by yourself. Any volunteer under the age of 18 must be with an adult at all times. We welcome children, ages 9 and up, to volunteer, as long as they are accompanied at all times by a parent/guardian. If you are a parent/child team interested in volunteering, we request that each of you fill out an application form.
I sent in my application. When can I start volunteering?
All volunteers are required to attend an orientation session, animal handling training and follow-up interview before beginning volunteer work. We must receive your completed volunteer application to reserve your space at the orientation. Reminders will be emailed out one to two weeks prior to your class date. If you are unable to keep your scheduled session, please call (316) 524-9196 or send us an email. The two-hour animal handling training is approximately two weeks after the orientation.
What is the fee for?
We greatly appreciate the time, energy and knowledge that volunteers share with our pets and our guests. This one-time $15 fee helps the KHS offset some of the costs of running our Volunteer Program and provide you with more resources to use while volunteering. It includes your volunteer t-shirt, name badge, key card, training materials, facility use and mailing costs. Note: The fee applies to volunteers 18 and older who have attended orientation on or after September 1, 2011; there is no fee for children 17 and under or for KHS Foster Volunteers.
Can I purchase additional volunteer t-shirts?
Of course! We love to see our volunteers wearing our t-shirts at KHS and in the community. Please contact our Volunteer department to purchase.
Adults: First shirt FREE with paid volunteer program fee (see previous question), Additional shirts $10
Children 17 and Under: First shirt $5, Additional shirts $10
Can I get volunteer credit for my school by volunteering at the Kansas Humane Society?
If your school has a program, we can sign off on the appropriate documentation provided by the volunteer after the community service has been completed.
I need to do court appointed community service. What do you have available?
We can take court appointed community service volunteers as needed on a case by case basis. Please contact our Staff Recruiter for more information.
I want to work for or have an internship at the Kansas Humane Society. Who do I contact?
