Choosing a Pet
Cats and Dogs Together
Many cats and dogs can get along well together under the right circumstances:
The Best of Circumstances
- Get both a puppy and a kitten at the same time and raise them together.
- Put together good-natured and well-trained dogs with a new kitten.
Stressful Situations:
- Hunting dogs and watch dogs are not usually friendly to cats.
- Bringing in a new puppy when an adult cat has been the only pet in the home for a long time may cause the older, resident cat can become depressed and withdraw indefinitely.
When you first introduce the two animals:
- Proceed slowly with supervised introductions.
- Make sure a new dog is obedience trained and will respond to your voice commands when interacting with the new cat or kitten.
- Proved separate feeding and sleeping areas for the two.
